Great Britain Stuns Australia, Advances to Billie Jean King Cup Finals

In a stunning turn of events, Jodie Burrage and Harriet Dart led Great Britain to a decisive 3-0 victory over Australia in their Billie Jean King Cup qualifier. The British duo dominated their doubles match, defeating Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to seal the win in Melbourne. After initially trailing 3-1 in the first set, Burrage and Dart regained their momentum, winning five consecutive games after the roof of the John Cain Arena was closed. The pair then traded breaks early in the second set before serving out the match on their first attempt, securing victory for Anne Keothavong's team. An emotional Burrage, who underwent surgery for a wrist injury and ruptured ankle ligament last year, expressed her pride in the team's performance, saying, 'That feels amazing... I'm proud of us for the way that we played and managed to close that out.' Dart added, 'It's crazy actually because we played pretty well, and to be able to make the finals is just kind of surreal.' Despite missing key players, including Emma Raducanu, Sonay Kartal, Katie Boulter, and Fran Jones, Great Britain took charge with singles victories on Friday, courtesy of Dart and debutant Mika Stojsavljevic. Although Katie Swan suffered a 7-5, 6-3 defeat to former junior world No 1 Emerson Jones due to a back issue, Great Britain's overall performance was impressive. The team has now won its last four qualifier rubbers in the Billie Jean King Cup, with victories over France, Germany, Netherlands, and Australia. They will proceed to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, scheduled for September, where they will compete against the other six tie winners from the qualifiers and host nation China. Great Britain captain Keothavong expressed her joy, stating, 'We're all just overjoyed... it's been an unbelievable week here in Melbourne, and the tennis that was played yesterday and today was just fantastic.' Keothavong believes Great Britain is 'due something special' after reaching the semi-finals last year and is confident that the team can win the Billie Jean King Cup, saying, 'That's always the ultimate goal, and I know we've got players and a strength in depth in the UK to do something special in this competition.'
