Hull FC Announces Cartwright's Departure at Season's End

John Cartwright, the head coach of Hull FC, will be leaving the team at the conclusion of the 2026 Super League season. Cartwright took the reins ahead of the 2025 campaign, during which the team finished seventh, and currently sits ninth in the 2026 standings with three wins and four losses after seven rounds. With a total of 39 games under his belt, he has secured 19 wins. Initially contracted until the end of the 2027 season, the club has chosen to release him from his contract a year early. According to Richie Myler, Hull's CEO, Cartwright played a crucial role in restoring stability and competitiveness to the team during his tenure. Myler expressed the board's gratitude for Cartwright's contributions and stated that he will continue to lead the first-team squad for the remainder of the season. Following the announcement of Cartwright's departure, the players reportedly opted out of a scheduled training session, seeking communication from club officials regarding the decision. The club is currently in the process of securing a new head coach for the 2027 season and will provide an update soon. There are reports that Hull FC has approached Steve McNamara, the former head coach of Catalans Dragons and current assistant coach at Warrington Wolves, to take over the position. McNamara previously played for Hull FC from 1989 to 1996.
