Ipswich Secure Historic Win at Norwich to Regain Second Place

Ipswich have significantly bolstered their chances of automatic promotion from the Championship with a hard-earned 2-0 victory over Norwich at Carrow Road. The win propelled Town into the top two, with two games in hand over third-placed Millwall, following first-half goals from Jaden Philogene, who scored a contentious penalty, and George Hirst, thus completing a long-awaited double over their East Anglian rivals. Despite Norwich dominating possession, they were thwarted by an impressive defensive display from the visitors, who limited clear-cut opportunities to a minimum. The loss marked the end of Norwich's faint playoff hopes, although their expected top-10 finish is a commendable achievement for a side that was in the bottom three at the start of the year. Ipswich took the lead in controversial circumstances after just 11 minutes when Anis Ben Slimane inadvertently caught Jack Taylor as he attempted to clear the ball, prompting referee Anthony Backhouse to award a penalty. Philogene subsequently sent Vladan Kovacevic the wrong way from the spot. The hosts gradually worked their way into the game, pinning Ipswich back for extended periods, but clear-cut chances were scarce. Pelle Mattsson's powerful shot, which Christian Walton grabbed low to his right, was a rare moment of danger for the visitors. Toure then scuffed a shot wide from a decent position before the arrival of ex-Canary Marcelino Nunez off the Ipswich bench heightened the already frenetic atmosphere. Town should have made it three following a swift counter-attack, but Taylor was denied by another excellent Kovacevic save before Nunez, who had picked up a booking, was substituted for his own good after an edgy cameo. Norwich's Philippe Clement expressed his disappointment, stating, 'We started well but then we were hit by a penalty which was not a penalty. Anis goes to clear the ball, their player dives into him, and Anis doesn't touch his leg. We have a transition, and then four or five seconds later, the referee gives a penalty. That is why I support VAR - you have to get these decisions right.'
