DeChambeau on Track for Masters Glory, But Did He Unintentionally Aid McIlroy's Grand Slam Bid?

McIlroy responded by ending his 11-year wait for a fifth major title at The Masters, where he played alongside DeChambeau on the final day. Former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley believes their rivalry played a significant role in McIlroy's Grand Slam success. McGinley stated, "There's no doubt that playing with Bryson in the last round last year helped McIlroy more than it hurt him. The reason it helped was that Bryson had previously belittled McIlroy, which drove him to focus and win the Grand Slam." McGinley added that DeChambeau's comments about McIlroy's US Open collapse had a profound impact, saying, "Bryson really did him a favor by forcing him into focus and getting him in the right mindset. If McIlroy could bring that intensity to every tournament, he would be unbeatable, but that's not his nature." McGinley thinks DeChambeau is trending towards a major victory, but notes that his iron play needs to improve, particularly at Augusta National, where strong iron play is crucial. McIlroy, on the other hand, is looking to become the first player since Tiger Woods to successfully defend the Green Jacket, but his game has been affected by injury and he struggled in his title defense at The Players. McGinley admitted that McIlroy's game is "off" and that it will be challenging for him to defend his title, given the distractions that come with being the defending champion.
