I Am Maximus Leads Grand National Lineup After Nick Rockett's Withdrawal
I Am Maximus is at the forefront of the 34 declared runners for the Randox Grand National, aiming to replicate the achievement of Red Rum, who won the prestigious steeplechase three times. Red Rum's victories in 1973, 1974, and 1977 serve as a benchmark for I Am Maximus, who won the Grand National two years ago under Paul Townend and finished second last year to stablemate Nick Rockett. With Nick Rockett ruled out due to a cough, I Am Maximus' chances have improved. Willie Mullins, the trainer of I Am Maximus, also has several other horses in the running, including Grangeclare West, Spanish Harlem, Lecky Watson, Champ Kiely, High Class Hero, Captain Cody, and Quai De Bourbon. Other notable contenders include Haiti Couleurs, Banbridge, Gerri Colombe, Firefox, Monty's Star, and Oscars Brother. Iroko and Jagwar, both owned by JP McManus, also have strong chances, while Ben Pauling's Twig, who finished 10th last year, is aiming to improve on that performance. The field is set, with the deadline for reserves to join the lineup being 1pm on Friday in the event of any withdrawals.
