In a stunning turn of events, Portsmouth secured a crucial victory by scoring the winning goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time, significantly boosting their chances of surviving in the Championship and dealing a severe blow to Middlesbrough's fading automatic promotion bid. The visitors, Middlesbrough, failed to register a shot on target until the final seconds, when Andre Dozzell's volley deflected in off Conor Chaplin, ending an eight-game winless streak for John Mousinho's side.
As a result, Boro now finds themselves winless in six games and trails second-placed Ipswich by three points, with Ipswich having two games in hand after their win at Norwich earlier in the day. Portsmouth's victory, courtesy of Chaplin's winner, keeps Mousinho's side a point and a place above the relegation zone.
Despite dominating the ball, Boro had 20 shots compared to Portsmouth's three, but they have now scored just four goals in their last six games, with two of those coming in a draw at Swansea. The game started with Kim Hellberg's side creating early opportunities, including a good save from Nicolas Schmid and a shot by Adilson Malanda that was deflected onto the roof of the net. However, for all their dominance, Boro struggled to create meaningful openings, with their only effort on target in the first half being a close-range header by Dael Fry that was saved by Schmid.
The second half saw Boro create several chances, including a through-ball by David Strelec that split the Portsmouth defense, but Schmid denied Riley McGree with his feet. Boro also had a two-on-one attack, but Tommy Conway opted to pass rather than shoot, and the opportunity was intercepted by Madiodio Dia.
Conway again chose to pass rather than shoot in another opportunity, and his attempted through ball for McGree bounced off defender Jordan Williams and rolled wide of Schmid's left post. Portsmouth launched a rare attack midway through the second half, but Terry Devlin's pick-out to Colby Bishop resulted in an audacious flick that went wide. Boro nearly forced a breakthrough in added time, but half-time substitute Sontje Hansen saw his shot cleared off the line by Dozzell. Portsmouth then won a corner, and Fry's headed clearance only reached Dozzell, whose first-time strike deflected in off his teammate.
Middlesbrough's Kim Hellberg expressed disappointment and devastation at the performance, stating that the first half was 'terrible' and 'like watching paint dry.' He acknowledged that the team created enough chances in the second half but was not efficient enough to score. Portsmouth's John Mousinho hailed the result as 'amazing' and emphasized the importance of picking up points at this stage of the season. He acknowledged that Middlesbrough is a good team and that his side had to defend for long stages and get through some difficult moments.
Mousinho also admitted that his team got lucky, which is something they have not had this season, particularly when struggling at the bottom of the table.
