Soldier In Milan Triumphs Over Rivals in Irish Grand National

In a stunning display, Soldier In Milan defied his lack of experience to secure a remarkable victory in the Boyle Sports Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse. Trained by Emmet Mullins, the seven-year-old had only five previous starts under his belt, including a notable win at the Punchestown Festival bumper last spring. Despite being beaten into fourth place as a strong favorite in a Grade Three novice chase at Thurles last month, Soldier In Milan was heavily backed to win, starting as a 6-1 favorite. Under the guidance of Donagh Meyler, he maintained a strong pace throughout the race, eventually taking the lead from British contender Monbeg Genius and going on to win by an impressive 16 lengths. The Enabler and Showurappreciation attempted to close the gap but were unable to match the winner's pace. Soldier In Milan's impressive performance has earned him a quote of 33-1 for next year's Cheltenham Gold Cup with some bookmakers. Mullins expressed his delight, stating, 'It hasn't really sunk in yet. I was pinching myself jumping the last with a lap to go, he was jumping and traveling smoothly.' The trainer praised Meyler's ride, saying, 'I had warned Donagh to wait as long as possible, and he executed everything perfectly.' Mullins also acknowledged the risk of bypassing a hurdle campaign but believed Soldier In Milan had the class to overcome his inexperience. The trainer hopes to get the horse back to 100 percent fitness and is considering future plans, including a possible Gold Cup campaign. Meanwhile, Energumene, a 12-year-old veteran trained by Willie Mullins, delivered an outstanding performance to win the Underwriting Exchange Fairyhouse Chase. Despite his age, Energumene showed remarkable enthusiasm and ability, traveling strongly throughout the two-and-a-half-mile race and scoring by six lengths from stablemate Blood Destiny. Mullins was thrilled with the result, saying, 'I'm amazed he could put in such a performance today. I'm delighted with Blood Destiny too, and sorry for Saint Sam and his connections.' Energumene is expected to have an entry in the Punchestown Festival before a decision is made on his future racing career.
