Smith Revives His Form with a Century as Surrey Draws with Warwickshire

Jamie Smith made a remarkable comeback from his struggles in the Ashes series with a century, helping Surrey secure a draw against Warwickshire in their County Championship season opener. Smith, who had a disappointing run in Australia with an average of 23.44 in five Tests, reminded England selectors of his abilities with a 132-run knock at No 3 in Surrey's second innings, which ended at 447-4 at Edgbaston. Despite trailing by 47 runs with three wickets down at the start of day four, following Warwickshire's massive first-innings total of 544, Smith's century and Dan Lawrence's 161 helped Surrey avoid defeat. The pair put on 217 runs for the fourth wicket, ensuring the match ended in a stalemate. Elsewhere in Division One, Somerset and Nottinghamshire drew at Taunton, while Glamorgan and Yorkshire also ended in a draw in Cardiff. Sussex, however, secured an opening win on the road at Leicestershire. James Rew, a potential rival to Smith for the wicketkeeper spot in the England Test team, scored a second-innings hundred for Somerset but added only 14 runs to his overnight 108 not out. Tom Kohler-Cadmore also scored a century, finishing with 104 runs, as the hosts declared on 407-5. Nottinghamshire comfortably held out for a draw, reaching 140-3 in 45 overs, with Ben Slater top-scoring with 60. Yorkshire had a nervier finish, holding out on the final evening of their match with Glamorgan, finishing on 239-7 from 67.4 overs after being set 295 to win. Glamorgan had earlier declared on 218-5, with Colin Ingram scoring 75 runs, before pushing for wickets. Leg-spinner Mason Crane claimed three wickets to reduce Yorkshire to 139-3, but Adam Lyth's crucial 97 runs proved to be a thorn in their side. His wicket, three short of a century, gave Glamorgan renewed hope at 174-5, but they ran out of overs. Sussex joined Essex as the only top-tier teams to register a win in the opening week, clinching a 222-run victory over Leicestershire. The hosts, resuming on 125-5, were eventually bowled out for 258, with seamer Henry Crocombe taking 4-36 to finish with match figures of 9-69. In Division Two, Middlesex triumphed by an innings and 14 runs over Gloucestershire, taking their last seven wickets for 83 runs on day four. Elsewhere, James Anderson missed out on victory in his first match as Lancashire's captain by a single wicket, while Durham ran out of time to force a win over Kent after losing a day's play to Storm Dave. Tawanda Muyeye hit an unbeaten 109 as Kent reached stumps on 254-5, and Worcestershire held on for a draw at Derbyshire, closing on 314-7 after being forced to follow on.
