Kent Struggles Against Northants as Crawley's Form Remains a Concern

Kent's batting woes continued as they trailed Northamptonshire, who posted a record 684 for two declared, with Zak Crawley's struggles at the top of the order a major worry. Ricardo Vasconcelos, Luke Procter, and Calvin Harrison all scored hundreds on the opening day, before Nathan McSweeney joined them in the century club on Saturday, a first for Northants' top four. Procter's unbeaten 261 was the highlight, and he became the first Northants batsman to achieve a double century this season, before Kent's turn to bat saw them lose Ben Compton and Sam Northeast cheaply. All eyes were on Crawley, whose Test spot is under threat following a disappointing Ashes series and a modest average of just over 31 in 64 matches, and he needs significant scores to bolster his position. After making 9 and 20 at Durham last week, Crawley showed some resilience in reaching 26, but his dismissal, caught behind off Harry Conway, has increased the pressure on him, with Kent closing on 119 for six. Nottinghamshire's Ben Duckett, Crawley's England opening partner, was run out for just one, but Joe Clarke's 136 helped the county champions establish a commanding 450-run lead over Glamorgan at Trent Bridge. Glamorgan were dismissed for 113, and Nottinghamshire took control, with Duckett's dismissal coming after a mix-up with Ben Slater, who made 70 in Notts' 284 for nine. Elsewhere, Ben McKinney boosted his chances of challenging Crawley or Duckett with 244 in Durham's 605 for five declared against Gloucestershire. Kemar Roach and Ben Raine then took three wickets apiece to leave Gloucestershire reeling at 168 for eight, still 437 behind. Craig Overton's career-best 141 helped Somerset reach 348 in response to Essex's 149, and although the hosts recovered from 45 for three in their second innings, they still trail by 68 going into the penultimate day. Rishi Patel's unbeaten 133 and Jake Weatherald's 96 helped Leicestershire fight back against Surrey, who had posted 520 at the Kia Oval, with the visitors closing on 350 for three. Sonny Baker and Kyle Abbott claimed four wickets each as Hampshire skittled Yorkshire for 177, and they finished the day on 93 for two, leading by 167. Rob Yates' unbeaten 75 helped Warwickshire establish a 217-run lead over Sussex, who were bowled out for 204 at Hove. Harry Came made 83, and Brooke Guest 60 not out, in Derbyshire's 235 for three in response to Lancashire's 351 at Emirates Old Trafford, where James Anderson took one for 33 from 14 overs. Daniel Lategan and Jake Libby scored fifties as Worcestershire reached 200 for seven, and a lead of 208, against Middlesex, who were earlier bowled out for 183 at Lord's.
