Brundle: Russell Must View Antonelli as a Formidable Rival

According to Sky Sports F1's Martin Brundle, George Russell should consider his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli a significant threat, akin to Lewis Hamilton at the height of his career, as the two engage in an emerging title battle. Despite Mercedes' dominant start to the season, with three consecutive wins, Antonelli surprisingly holds a nine-point lead over Russell. The 19-year-old Italian has been fortunate, with a well-timed safety car at the Japanese Grand Prix allowing him to overtake Russell and secure his second successive victory, following Russell's win in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. As Antonelli is in only his second F1 campaign, Russell was initially favored to win the title, but the early results suggest a more competitive battle between the two Mercedes drivers than anticipated. Russell, who earned his Mercedes seat in 2022 after a three-year stint at Williams, was previously paired with Lewis Hamilton for three seasons before Hamilton joined Ferrari in 2025. Brundle stated on The F1 Show podcast, 'If I were George, I'd be more concerned after three races than I was at the beginning of the season. George has to treat Kimi Antonelli as a serious championship contender, just like Lewis Hamilton in his prime.' Brundle believes Russell's experience will ultimately give him an edge, but he has been impressed by Antonelli's speed and ability to bounce back from setbacks, such as a significant crash during the opening weekend of the season. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has downplayed Antonelli's championship chances, but Brundle thinks Russell should not underestimate his young teammate.
