Ipswich Claims Victory Over Norwich, Ending 20-Year Drought

Ipswich has significantly boosted their chances of automatic promotion from the Championship with a hard-won 2-0 victory over Norwich at Carrow Road. The team has moved into the top two, with two games in hand over third-placed Millwall, after first-half goals from Jaden Philogene and George Hirst sealed a long-awaited double over their East Anglian rivals. Norwich dominated possession but was thwarted by an impressive defensive display from the visitors, who limited clear-cut chances to a minimum. The defeat has ended Norwich's slim hopes of making the playoffs, although a top-10 finish remains a remarkable achievement for a side that was in the bottom three at the start of the year. Ipswich took the lead in controversial fashion after 11 minutes when Anis Ben Slimane accidentally caught Jack Taylor, and referee Anthony Backhouse awarded a penalty. Philogene sent Vladan Kovacevic the wrong way from the spot. The Norwich 'keeper then made a good save to palm away Hirst's header from a deep free-kick, but the hosts gradually worked their way into the game. Despite having plenty of the ball, clear-cut chances were scarce, with Pelle Mattsson's powerful shot being a rare moment of danger for the visitors. Kovacevic made another good stop to deny Hirst just before the break, but moments later, Town doubled their lead. Darnell Furlong's long throw from the left was flicked on, and an unmarked Hirst volleyed home to give his side a two-goal advantage. Norwich made two attacking substitutions at the break, with Mo Toure and Oscar Schwartau coming on, and Slimane was quick to test Walton following a quick break. Toure then scuffed a shot wide from a decent position before the arrival of ex-Canary Marcelino Nunez off the Ipswich bench increased the already frenetic atmosphere. Town should have made it three following a swift counter-attack, but Taylor was denied by another excellent Kovacevic save. Nunez, who had picked up a booking, was substituted for his own good after an edgy cameo. Norwich's Philippe Clement expressed his disappointment with the penalty decision, stating that Anis Ben Slimane didn't touch the leg of the Ipswich player. Ipswich's Kieran McKenna praised his team's performance, calling it a brilliant result for the club and acknowledging the importance of the fixture. He also highlighted the team's resilience and togetherness in achieving the win.
