Katie Boulter's Clay-Court Campaign Begins with Early Defeat

Katie Boulter's clay-court season got off to a disappointing start as she fell in the first round of the Linz Open in Austria, losing in straight sets to Elena-Gabriela Ruse. The Romanian secured a tight victory, winning 7-6 (6-3) 7-6 (6-2) against the British No 3. Boulter struggled initially, being broken in her first two service games, but managed to level the score at 4-4 in the opening set. However, Ruse took control, comfortably winning the first tie-break. Although Ruse was broken at the start of the second set, Boulter failed to capitalize and was broken again after taking a 3-2 lead. Serving to stay in the match at 6-5 down, Boulter saved a match point but ultimately lost the second-set tie-break, ending her tournament early. Ruse will now face either Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska or American seventh seed Ann Li in the next round. The match highlights the challenging start to Boulter's clay-court season.
