Storm Dave Causes Extensive Damage to Durham Cricket Ground

The Durham cricket stadium has suffered damage due to Storm Dave, prompting initial safety concerns that led to fans being kept away on the third day of the County Championship Division Two match against Kent. A scaffolding platform at one end of the ground, which supported a sightscreen, was blown over, and fencing was also affected. Additionally, a wheeled cover ended up in the stands at Chester-le-Street. Durham issued a statement on Sunday morning, announcing that play would not commence on schedule due to the overnight weather impact and a wet pitch, which was caused by the covers being blown away, leaving the surface exposed to rain. As a result, the entire day's play was eventually abandoned. Spectators were allowed to return to the ground shortly after 1 pm, but no cricket was played. Visiting head coach Adam Hollioake described the scene as resembling a 'war scene' in an interview with BBC Kent Sport before the day's play was officially called off. He cited the substantial amount of water that had seeped onto the wicket as the primary reason for the delay. Storm Dave has brought heavy rainfall, snow, and gale-force winds to parts of the UK, with yellow warnings in place across northern England, Scotland, and Wales, although conditions are expected to improve. Hollioake noted that while cricket can be played without sightscreens, the current state of the wicket, with a large patch of water, would make it challenging to start play. Durham, who were relegated to the second tier at the end of the last season, are currently 83-2 in their second innings, leading Kent by 221 runs in the season opener. England hopeful Emilio Gay scored a century in the home side's first innings before being dismissed for 11 in the second innings. The Durham ground is set to host three senior England matches this summer, starting with a women's ODI against New Zealand on Sunday, May 10, followed by a T20 international against India on Wednesday, July 1, and an ODI against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, September 22.
