Marin Claims Record-Breaking Victory at Augusta National Women's Amateur

Colombian golfer Maria Jose Marin made history on Saturday by securing a decisive win at the Augusta National Women's Amateur, shattering the tournament's scoring record by two strokes with a total of 14-under 202. The 19-year-old, who is a junior at the University of Arkansas, began the final round just one shot behind leader Asterisk Talley, but a stunning collapse by the 17-year-old American on the back nine paved the way for Marin's triumph. Marin, who had previously expressed her disappointment at failing to make the cut in the previous year's tournament, was overjoyed by her victory, stating, "It means everything to me." Her win marks the third time an NCAA champion has emerged victorious at the prestigious Augusta National, following in the footsteps of Jennifer Kupcho and Rose Zhang. Talley, who had been leading by as many as three shots early in the round, suffered a dramatic downfall on the back nine, including a quadruple-bogey seven on the par-three 12th hole, which ultimately led to her finishing tied for fourth place. Meanwhile, Marin continued to excel, two-putting for birdie on the par-five 13th to move to 14-under par and establish a five-shot lead. Andrea Revuelta posed the final challenge to Marin, birdieing Amen Corner to stay within striking distance, but the Colombian golfer remained composed, laying up on the par-five 15th and eventually making a bogey putt to maintain her three-shot advantage. Revuelta, who had reached the back collar of the green in two, missed her birdie opportunity and had to settle for par, finishing as runner-up with a total score of 68. Marin sealed her victory with a birdie on the 16th, and as she walked up the 18th green, she was met with cheers and applause, her beaming smile a testament to her incredible achievement. Among those congratulating Marin was Maria Fassi of Mexico, another Arkansas star who had finished as runner-up in the inaugural tournament, an experience that Marin has often cited as a significant source of inspiration. Masters chairman Fred Ridley presented the trophy to Marin in Butler Cabin, where she proudly held it aloft, exclaiming, "It's so pretty." In addition to her NCAA win last year, Marin also claimed the Women's Amateur Latin America title, earning her a spot in three LPGA Tour majors this year. The Masters, the first major of the year, will be broadcast exclusively live on Sky Sports from April 9-12, with live coverage of the first round starting on Thursday at 2 pm on Sky Sports Golf.
