Hibernian Gains Ground on Motherwell in European Pursuit with Convincing Win Over Kilmarnock

Hibernian capitalized on a strong start to secure a 3-0 victory over Kilmarnock at Easter Road, thereby increasing the pressure on Motherwell in the quest for the fourth spot in the William Hill Premiership. The match saw Hibernian score two goals within the first 12 minutes, courtesy of Owen Elding and Felix Passlack, before substitute Ante Suto added a third in stoppage time. This win brings David Gray's team within three points of Motherwell, who had an eight-point lead just over a month ago. As Hibernian, now unbeaten in six matches, chase a position that guarantees a European spot for next season, Kilmarnock remains in the relegation play-off spot, three points behind both St Mirren and Aberdeen. The team saw four changes from the previous match, with Grant Hanley, Jack Iredale, Elding, and Dane Scarlett replacing Rocky Bushiri, Nicky Cadden, Martin Boyle, and Suto. Kilmarnock made one change, with Brad Lyons replacing Marley Watkins. The hosts initiated the scoring within 15 seconds of the kickoff. A long kick by Raphael Sallinger was headed clear by Robbie Deas but found its way to Jamie McGrath, who then found Passlack. The German midfielder drove in from the right and passed the ball into the box for Elding, who scored with a low finish from six yards for his third goal since joining Hibernian in January. Elding played a crucial role in doubling the lead in the 12th minute with a magnificent pass that split the Kilmarnock defense, allowing Jordan Obita to advance down the left. Obita then squared the ball across the edge of the six-yard box for Passlack, who tapped it into the empty net. Hibernian threatened to score a third in the 22nd minute when Obita's cross from the left was directed into the danger area by Elding, but Aaron Tshibola cleared it, and the ball was gathered by Kelle Roos. As the half progressed, Kilmarnock began to gain momentum and thought they had equalized in the 25th minute when Findlay Curtis fired home from 10 yards, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR check due to Lyons being offside in the build-up. The visitors started the second half brightly but, apart from a Greg Kiltie shot from the edge of the box that was beaten away by Sallinger, they rarely looked like mounting a comeback before Suto scored in the dying seconds.
