Cantwell's Winner Eases Relegation Fears for Blackburn at Birmingham

Blackburn captain Todd Cantwell scored the decisive goal in the 69th minute, firing past James Beadle after Ryoya Morishita's assist, to give his team a vital three points in their bid for Sky Bet Championship survival. The victory at St Andrew's on Good Friday lifted Rovers six points clear of the relegation zone. Birmingham, who had previously lost only twice at home this season, have now suffered five defeats in seven games, putting their campaign at risk of fading out. The hosts started brightly, with Jay Stansfield and Marvin Ducksch combining well, but Ducksch's effort was comfortably saved by Balazs Toth. Blackburn, needing points to ensure their Championship status, gradually gained momentum, with Cantwell going close with a low drive and Tom Atcheson heading wide from a corner. The first half was entertaining but goalless, with both teams creating chances. Birmingham's Patrick Roberts skillfully evaded Sean McLoughlin and set up Ibrahim Osman, who hit the post, while Paik rifled a shot that Toth pushed over the bar. After the restart, Tomoki Iwata curled an effort wide, and Adam Forshaw's press nearly paid off, but Paik redeemed himself with a block. Japanese forward Ohashi went close again, but Beadle produced a firm save. However, Beadle could not prevent Cantwell's winner, set up by Morishita after Birmingham conceded possession in midfield. Birmingham failed to respond, with Tommy Doyle's finish lacking quality, and Rovers' Toth sealed the win. Birmingham's Chris Davies expressed disappointment, stating that his team lacked confidence and rhythm, while defensively they looked vulnerable. Blackburn's Michael O'Neill praised his team's attitude and effort, highlighting the importance of reaching 50 points and above. The win lifted Blackburn to 46 points, and they face West Brom on Monday in a good position, with their away form having been impressive.
