ECB Chief Addresses Criticism from Dropped England Players

England and Wales Cricket Board CEO Richard Gould has responded to recent criticism from active players who have been dropped from the national team, suggesting their comments are a natural reaction to being left out. Players like Jonny Bairstow, Reece Topley, and Liam Livingstone have spoken out about their experiences with the current England set-up, led by Rob Key and Brendon McCullum. Livingstone described his time at the Champions Trophy as particularly disappointing, while Topley and Bairstow have also expressed their concerns. Gould acknowledged that being dropped is difficult for players, but emphasized that the ECB must focus on those currently in the team. He also addressed the recent ECB review into the 4-1 Ashes defeat, which saw Key, McCullum, and Test captain Ben Stokes retain their positions despite criticism. Furthermore, Gould ruled out any attempt to restrict counties from signing Australian players ahead of the 2027 Ashes, citing discrimination laws. The ECB managing director, Rob Andrew, added that the debate over the number of overseas players in county competitions is ongoing, but there are no plans to ban Australian players.
