French Court Rejects Cardiff City's £100m Compensation Claim Over Emiliano Sala's Death

A French commercial court has ruled against Cardiff City's claim for over £100m in compensation following the fatal plane crash of Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala in 2019. Sala and pilot David Ibbotson died when their aircraft crashed in the English Channel while traveling from Nantes to Cardiff. The Welsh club had argued that Nantes was liable due to their alleged role in organizing the flight through agent Willie McKay. However, the court found Nantes not at fault and ordered Cardiff to pay over £400,000. Cardiff had claimed that Sala's presence could have prevented the team's relegation from the Premier League, resulting in significant financial losses. The court dismissed these claims as 'extravagant' and stated that Cardiff did not suffer reputational damage. Nantes was found to have suffered moral damage. Cardiff expressed disappointment in the ruling, stating it did not uphold the principles of transparency, integrity, and safety in professional football. The decision comes after Cardiff was ordered by FIFA to pay Nantes the £13m transfer fee for Sala. A separate criminal case resulted in the conviction of David Henderson, who organized the fatal flight, for recklessly endangering the safety of an aircraft.
