Sabalenka Successfully Defends Miami Title and Achieves 'Sunshine Double'

Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning champion, emerged victorious against local favorite Coco Gauff in the Miami Open final, earning her a place in an elite group of players who have accomplished the coveted 'Sunshine Double'. Sabalenka, ranked number one in the world, won the match 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, without dropping a set throughout the tournament, and secured 73% of her first-serve points while facing only two break points. This victory marks Sabalenka as the fifth woman to claim both the Indian Wells and Miami titles consecutively, a feat known as the 'Sunshine Double' due to the tournaments' locations in California and Florida. The match began with Sabalenka taking a 2-0 lead, but Gauff managed to get back on track with a love hold and then fended off three break points in her subsequent service game to narrow the gap to 3-2. However, Sabalenka maintained her focus and eventually achieved a double break against the world's fourth-ranked player before dominating the opening set. The second set remained closely contested until Gauff broke Sabalenka's serve for the only time in the match, forcing a deciding set. Sabalenka broke Gauff's serve in the opening game of the final set, held her serve at love in two consecutive games to take a 5-3 lead, and then sealed the win with her fourth break of the match when Gauff hit a backhand wide. With this achievement, Sabalenka joins the ranks of Iga Swiatek, Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, and Steffi Graf as one of the few women to complete the 'Sunshine Double'. Her victory also improves her record to 23-1 for the year, with her only loss being to Elena Rybakina in the Australian Open final.
