Antonelli Secures Second Consecutive Pole in Japan as Russell Struggles

Kimi Antonelli capitalized on George Russell's qualifying difficulties to secure his second consecutive pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix. Following his maiden pole and win in China, Antonelli carried his momentum into Suzuka, outpacing Russell in the final practice sessions and into qualifying. Russell, meanwhile, faced issues with his car's rear grip, trailing Antonelli by significant margins in Q1 and Q2, and although he narrowed the gap in Q3, Antonelli's first attempt time of 1:28.778 proved 0.298s quicker. Sky Sports F1's Jenson Button praised Antonelli's performance, saying, "What a lap! Three tenths on his team-mate George Russell - very, very impressive. I feel we have seen a different Kimi this weekend. He has always been extremely quick but the consistency is there." The Mercedes drivers had unexpectedly faced challenges from McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in the first stages of qualifying before securing the top spots. Piastri continued his positive weekend, beating Leclerc to third, while the latter took fourth after an error in his final attempt. World champion Lando Norris, whose weekend was compromised by reliability issues, finished fifth, with Lewis Hamilton sixth. Max Verstappen, who had been on pole at Suzuka for the previous four years, struggled with his Red Bull's balance and handling, dropping out in Q2 and starting 11th. Pierre Gasly took seventh, beating both Red Bulls, with Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto ninth and Arvid Lindblad 10th. Antonelli reflected on his session, saying, "I'm super happy with the session. It was a good one, it was a clean one. I felt very good in the car and every run I was improving and improving." Russell, however, expressed his disappointment, stating, "It was a really strange session for us. We were both very fast all weekend. We made some adjustments after FP3, and then at the beginning of qualifying, we were nowhere. So, we need to kind of understand. Very lucky again to be in P2. The last two weekends it's kind of both gone wrong come qualifying, but the race is tomorrow and there's still a lot to play for."
