Littler Claims Berlin Title with Thrilling Win Over Van Gerwen

Luke Littler has taken the top spot in the Premier League Darts table after securing his third nightly win of the season with a 6-4 victory over Michael van Gerwen in a captivating Berlin final. Littler's path to the title included a quarter-final win against Stephen Bunting, with a score of 6-3, and a semi-final victory over Gerwyn Price, winning 6-4. He then went on to defeat Van Gerwen, claiming his third Premier League title in just four weeks. The world No 1, Van Gerwen, achieved a 106.36 average and hit four maximums in the intense contest at the Uber Arena. Littler, however, sealed the deal with three ton-plus finishes, including two 'Big Fish' checkouts in the final three legs, to take home the £10,000 first prize and five points for the nightly win. This win has propelled Littler two points clear of Jonny Clayton in the standings. Van Gerwen's run to the final, where he defeated Luke Humphries and Josh Rock, earned him three points and a spot inside the top four. Gerwyn Price remains in third place ahead of Van Gerwen, after beating Gian van Veen on his way to the semi-finals. Defending champion Humphries has dropped outside the play-off places at the halfway stage of the league phase. Littler initially took control of the final, breaking Van Gerwen on D10 and firing a 126 checkout to take a 3-0 lead. Van Gerwen fought back, holding throw and breaking Littler with a ton-plus finish, eventually leveling the match. Littler regained the lead and opened up a two-leg buffer with his first 'Big Fish' of the night. Van Gerwen missed a dart at tops, allowing Littler to secure victory with another 170 finish. 'I played very well, and they were on my side at times,' Littler said in a post-match interview. 'I think this is definitely the best I have played in a night.' Littler received boos from the Berlin crowd but showed no ill effects, firing a 103 checkout to take a four-leg advantage against Bunting. Bunting avoided a whitewash with a stunning 167 finish but ultimately lost. Littler averaged 108.58 in his semi-final against Price, which he won 6-4. The night's opening match saw Clayton fail to post a maximum in a lackluster display against Rock, who secured his first points of the Premier League season with a 6-3 win. Rock's semi-final against Van Gerwen started strong, with back-to-back maximums and a 10-dart break of throw, but poor finishing cost him the match. The Premier League heads to the AO Arena in Manchester for Night Nine, with Van Gerwen facing Bunting and Price taking on Humphries. Littler, seeking a fourth nightly win in five weeks, will face Van Veen, while Clayton will face Rock again after losing to the Northern Irishman in Berlin.
