Selby Favors UK Venue for World Snooker Championship During Crucible Renovation

Mark Selby expresses his desire for the World Snooker Championship to remain in the UK when the Crucible undergoes refurbishment in 2029 and possibly 2030. Despite President of Matchroom Sport Barry Hearn's various ideas, Selby hopes the tournament will stay in the UK. The Crucible, which has hosted the championship since 1977, is set to undergo a £45m refurbishment, increasing its capacity by up to 500 seats and improving spectator facilities. Seven-time champion Ronnie O'Sullivan has suggested moving the tournament away from the Crucible, citing its cramped and outdated conditions. However, with the Prime Minister's help, the tournament is secured in Sheffield until 2045, with an option to extend until 2050. Selby, a four-time world champion, believes the tournament should remain in the UK, citing the country's rich snooker history and the success of other UK-based tournaments. Possible alternative venues include Alexandra Palace in London and Manchester Central. The World Snooker Tour is exploring options, with Selby hoping the tournament will only be relocated for one year. The 2023 tournament is set to begin on April 18 and run until May 4, with a strong field of competitors, including O'Sullivan, Judd Trump, and Neil Robertson.
