Sifan Hassan Withdraws from London Marathon Due to Treadmill Accident

Olympic gold medalist Sifan Hassan has announced her withdrawal from the upcoming TCS London Marathon, citing an 'unfortunate incident' involving a treadmill. The reigning champion, who won the 2023 event, has been struggling with an Achilles injury sustained during training. Despite initial hopes that the injury was minor, Hassan has decided to prioritize her long-term health and avoid exacerbating the issue. 'This was a difficult decision for me,' Hassan stated. 'I have fond memories of racing in the TCS London Marathon, where I won my first marathon. However, to compete at this level, one must be in top condition.' Hassan's injury has hindered her training, and she has chosen to focus on recovery rather than risk further injury. The 33-year-old has won numerous titles, including Olympic gold in the 5,000m, 10,000m, and marathon events. Her withdrawal from the London Marathon has opened up the field, with Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa and Kenyan duo Joyciline Jepkosgei and Peres Jepchirchir among the top contenders. British athletes Charlotte Purdue, Rose Harvey, and Abbie Donnelly will also participate in the elite field, alongside Eilish McColgan, who returns after her debut last year.
