Tragedy Strikes Near The Players: Fatal Shooting Causes Delay
A fatal shooting incident near the TPC Sawgrass course led to a delay in spectators entering The Players ahead of the third round. The incident occurred at a nearby Walgreens around 10:30pm on Friday, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. Local authorities identified the suspect, who had a prior record with the police, and tracked him onto the course using canine units. The suspect fled on foot, stole a car, and was eventually captured in Nassau County after a police chase. St. Johns County Sheriff Robert Hardwick addressed the incident in a press conference, stating that the suspect was known to the police due to a domestic violence situation in the Walgreens parking lot. The third round commenced as scheduled at 8:15am, with some adjustments to the operational schedule. The PGA Tour released a statement announcing that gates would open at 9 am ET, and all on-course hospitality venues would open at 11 am ET.
