Uncovering Usyk's Secrets and Verhoeven's Chances of Victory

Rico Verhoeven, the world's top heavyweight kickboxer, is stepping into the boxing ring to face Oleksandr Usyk, the current WBC titleholder, on May 23. This crossover bout marks a significant challenge for Verhoeven, who has only had one prior boxing match. Jonathan Haggerty, the ONE Championship bantamweight world titlist, believes Verhoeven deserves the opportunity to fight Usyk, despite the odds being against him. Haggerty praises Verhoeven, saying, "He's been a champion for years, undefeated. He's just a beast of a guy really. He goes in there, demolishes people." However, Haggerty also acknowledges that Usyk is the best in the world for a reason, saying, "I don't think he's got a chance really. Usyk's the best in the world for a reason." Verhoeven is training with expert boxing trainer Peter Fury, which Haggerty sees as a positive. "He's in good hands so we'll have to wait and see," Haggerty said. "He is a unit, so Usyk's just going to have to move. That's the advice I'd give. Get stuck in. Make it uncomfortable." Former WBO cruiserweight titlist Chris Billam-Smith is also skeptical about Verhoeven's chances, saying, "It's two different sports and I'd be surprised if Usyk doesn't handily beat him." Usyk's skills, including his counter-punching ability and movement, set him apart from other fighters. Richie Woodhall, a former world champion and now a boxing coach and commentator, breaks down what makes Usyk unique. "He's the best counter-puncher on the front foot that I've seen in a long time," Woodhall said. "His movement is unbelievable, you never see him on the ropes, you never see him in the corners. His movement is always circular around the opponent." Amir Khan, a former two-weight world champion, has seen Usyk train and praises his hand-eye co-ordination and movement. "It's something else. The way he moves, he moves like a lightweight and the way he throws those punches is like water. So easy and smooth," Khan said. Usyk's training methods are also unconventional, incorporating footwork drills, coin-catching exercises, and vision drills. Khan believes that Usyk's ability to dismantle opponents, even those with significant size advantages, is what makes him an amazing fighter. "He knows how to break down a fighter," Khan said. "Someone might be confident, someone might be strong, he knows how to break down any fighter and the guy is the best." With Verhoeven's physicality and Usyk's technical skills, this fight promises to be an intriguing one. As Haggerty said, "It's going to be brilliant. As long as he's got no kicks then Usyk might be okay."
