A High-Handicapper's Thrilling Experience at TPC Sawgrass' Infamous 17th

The 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass is one of golf's most iconic and intimidating par-three holes, surrounded by water and wind, with grandstands that amplify the pressure. It has been the site of numerous memorable moments, including Tiger Woods' incredible putt and 14 holes-in-one. Recently, Cameron Young made a crucial birdie putt there to win The Players by one shot. But what's it like for a 28-handicapper to tackle this challenging course? Less than 14 hours after Young's victory, I had the opportunity to find out, playing alongside Dame Laura Davies and fellow Sky Sports colleagues Tom Clark and Jordan Roberts. We played a shambles format, which was beneficial for someone with limited distance off the tee like myself. The white tees provided a more manageable challenge, allowing us to appreciate the incredible distance PGA Tour stars can hit the ball. Our round began with a nerve-wracking start at the 18th, a par-four with water to the left and trees to the right. Despite initial panic, I managed to hit a solid drive onto the fairway, albeit 200 yards shorter than Young's previous day. The first encounter with the thick rough came a couple of shots later, and I struggled to gauge the ball's distance. However, I managed to make the green and card a double bogey, which was a respectable score considering the challenges. The round was a mix of highs and lows, with moments of brilliance and chaos. At the par-four next, I hit a big drive and played from my tee shot, resulting in a legitimate bogey. However, my short game deserted me at the par-five second, and I struggled with tricky bunkers and lightning-fast greens. One of the highlights of the day came at the par-four 12th, where I knocked a short iron from the right rough to within 10 feet of the cup. As the winds strengthened, balls going into the water or being buried in the rough became increasingly common. The main event was the 17th, where I stepped up to the tee with self-doubt and uncertainty. Which club could realistically reach the green? How could I keep it on the green? I opted for a five-iron and watched in disbelief as the ball sailed straight to the heart of the green, holding up in the second cut just inches from the sleepers. The chip to follow was a downhill stab, and I managed to make a five-footer for par, a truly special way to end an incredible day. TPC Sawgrass is a course that tests every facet of a golfer's game, and it's a brutally brilliant test for amateurs. The experience was unforgettable, and the stories of that memorable Monday will be shared for years to come.
