Aston Villa Intensify Pursuit of Striker Tammy Abraham

Aston Villa is ramping up efforts to secure the signing of striker Tammy Abraham. The 28-year-old, currently on loan from Roma to Besiktas, has met the required thresholds to trigger a mandatory purchase clause in the deal. Villa officials and Abraham's representatives observed him in action in Istanbul on Monday, ahead of Villa's match against Fenerbahce on Thursday. The club seeks to bolster its squad, particularly after the recent sale of Donyell Malen to Roma. However, the deal is complicated due to Abraham's loan situation. As it stands, Abraham will become a permanent Besiktas player in the summer unless an alternative arrangement is reached. Besiktas would need to find a replacement before allowing Abraham to leave. Abraham has scored 13 goals in 26 matches across all competitions for Besiktas. Other Premier League and European clubs are also interested in the striker. Abraham previously had a successful loan spell at Villa from Chelsea in the 2018/19 season, scoring 26 times in 40 appearances and helping the team win promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs. He joined Roma in 2021 and has played 120 times, scoring 37 goals. Villa manager Unai Emery stated that his squad is not a top-five contender despite being third in the standings. The club must be cautious with spending due to its high wage bill relative to revenue. Villa was fined £9.5m by UEFA in July for breaking financial rules. The club missed out on signing Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid due to wanting a loan deal, while Tottenham Hotspur paid the £35m asking price. Meanwhile, Leon Bailey's loan spell at Roma has been cut short, and he is returning to Aston Villa. Bailey joined Roma in the summer with a purchase option but made only 11 appearances before his premature exit. He is set to return to England on Tuesday.
