Raducanu Basks in New Nickname and Aims for Further Improvement

Emma Raducanu expressed her delight with her commanding straight-sets victory in the Australian Open's first round on Sunday, but emphasized that she has significant room for improvement. Following a sluggish start, Raducanu dominated the match against Thailand's Mananchaya Sawangkaew, winning 10 of the last 11 games to secure a 6-4, 6-1 win. Raducanu had a rushed preparation for the tournament due to an injury, returning to the court in late December after a foot issue that had persisted since the end of the previous season. "Given that I've only had two weeks of playing here, I'm pleased with my level and the speed at which I've adapted to the match court," Raducanu stated. "It boosts my confidence, knowing that if I continue to work hard and put in quality practice, I can improve substantially." Raducanu recovered from a 3-1 deficit in the opening set, facing two break points at 15-40 on her own serve, and credited the support of an Australian super-fan in the stands for inspiring her comeback. "I've apparently got a new nickname - 'Raddo' - which I'd never heard before. It's quite original," she said. Raducanu appreciated the support, saying, "It was great to have that encouragement, especially in crucial moments." She also acknowledged trying to be more vocal on the court during her evening match, which started shortly before 9:45 pm local time in Melbourne. "When you're playing in the first round, you're inevitably nervous. It's a Grand Slam, a big match, and your opponent is playing well. It's late at night, so to maintain energy and motivation, I thought it was helpful to stay positive and upbeat," Raducanu added. Much tougher challenges await the British No. 1, with Anastasia Potapova waiting in the next round and potentially world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the third round. Regarding her next opponent, Raducanu said, "I remember Anastasia being a player to watch and beat in the juniors. She's been highly ranked in the pros and had a tough match today, which must have given her a lot of confidence. She's a big hitter, so I know it will be a challenging match. I need to gather my strength and prepare as well as possible for the next round."
