Red Bull Anticipates Lagging Behind Rivals at Start of 2026 F1 Season

Red Bull's team principal, Laurent Mekies, has expressed his expectation that the team will trail behind their main competitors at the beginning of the 2026 Formula 1 season. This comes as Red Bull embarks on a new challenge, manufacturing their own engine in collaboration with Ford, to coincide with the introduction of new regulations for power units and chassis. Having narrowly missed out on a fifth consecutive drivers' title last year, with Max Verstappen losing to McLaren's Lando Norris by just two points, there are significant doubts about Red Bull's ability to challenge for honors in 2026 as they adapt to their new power unit. Mekies acknowledged the difficulties ahead, stating that the team will face sleepless nights and headaches but is optimistic about their potential for growth and improvement throughout the season. Red Bull is not only supplying their own engines but also those of their junior team, Racing Bulls, while other top teams like Mercedes, Ferrari, and Audi are also producing their own engines. Despite the anticipated initial struggles, Mekies believes the team can make substantial progress during the campaign, citing their strong team and partners as key factors. Verstappen, who committed to staying with Red Bull for at least one more season, remains uncertain about the team's competitiveness in 2026 but is focused on maximizing their potential.
