McIlroy Takes Early Lead at Dubai Invitational with Impressive Opening Round

Rory McIlroy kicked off 2026 in style, carding a five-under 66 to take the lead after the first round of the Dubai Invitational. This marks his first tournament of the year, following a remarkable 2025 that saw him win The Masters to complete his career Grand Slam and play a pivotal role in Team Europe's Ryder Cup victory. McIlroy, who finished as the runner-up in the 2024 Dubai Invitational, is well-positioned to improve on that result this week. He finished one stroke ahead of Scotland's Connor Syme and Spain's David Puig, while England's Matt Wallace was among five players tied at three-under, having dropped four shots over the final seven holes. McIlroy's strong start included back-to-back birdies from the 10th hole and two more on the 13th and 14th, setting the tone for his round. Although he couldn't replicate the same scoring opportunities on the front nine, his overall performance was solid, with the exception of a bogey on the third hole. McIlroy, the current Race to Dubai champion, expressed satisfaction with his round, noting, 'I got off to a great start. I played a very good first nine, but the wind picked up, and the front nine felt trickier.' He also made adjustments to his equipment, switching to cavity-back irons and using a new ball, which he felt provided an improvement.
