McIlroy Views Koepka's PGA Tour Return as Evidence of LIV Golf's Downfall

According to Rory McIlroy, the recent return of Brooks Koepka to the PGA Tour signifies a decline in LIV Golf's influence. McIlroy, the reigning Masters champion, believes Koepka's swift reinstatement is a telling sign. This development occurred less than a month after Koepka terminated his contract with the Saudi-backed breakaway league a year early. The move has been widely welcomed by top golf professionals, prompting the PGA Tour to revise its rules and create a framework for other big names like Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, and Cam Smith to potentially return. McIlroy, who recently led the Dubai Invitational with a five-under 66 in his first competitive round of the year, stated that LIV Golf's inability to secure significant new signings this year is a clear indication of its current state. He expressed that even if LIV were to re-sign notable players like Bryson DeChambeau for substantial amounts, it wouldn't alter the essence of their product, especially considering the loss of Koepka. Meanwhile, 2023 US Open champion Wyndham Clark also applauded Koepka's return, admitting his own frustration at having previously rejected LIV Golf's offer. Clark acknowledged that while Koepka's return is beneficial for the PGA Tour, it's also frustrating to see him able to 'have his cake and eat it.' McIlroy has made adjustments to his game for the new season, switching to cavity-back irons, which are more forgiving and commonly used by amateur golfers. He expressed satisfaction with the transition during the Dubai Creek Resort tournament. The event was momentarily paused to pay tribute to young golfer Emanuele Galeppini and 39 others who lost their lives in a fire in Crans Montana, Switzerland, on New Year's Day.
