Raducanu Suffers Upset Defeat to Preston Ahead of Australian Open

Emma Raducanu's Australian Open preparations have hit a roadblock after she was defeated 6-2 6-4 by Taylah Preston in the Hobart International quarter-finals. Raducanu, who could potentially face world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the third round of the Australian Open, struggled to find her footing as Preston delivered a remarkable performance on home turf. This marks only the second time Raducanu has fallen to a player outside the top 200, with Preston ranked 204th in the WTA rankings prior to the tournament. Preston, 20, expressed her excitement, saying, "I'm just thrilled to have made it to the next round and to have played in front of such a great crowd." Raducanu began strongly, breaking Preston in the first game, but the Australian quickly broke back and held serve before a rain delay. Upon resumption, Preston dominated, breaking Raducanu to take a 4-1 lead and going on to win the first set in impressive fashion. Raducanu attempted a comeback in the second set, breaking Preston early on, but the Australian rebounded with precise ball-striking to level the score at 3-3. However, Raducanu let another break slip away in the eighth game, allowing Preston to secure the biggest win of her career and extend her dream run in Hobart.
