Champions League Play-offs: Will Three English Teams Clash?
As the Champions League league phase nears its conclusion, several top teams are on the verge of securing a knockout spot, while others face the prospect of an early exit. The Opta Supercomputer has forecast the final standings with two games remaining, revealing that some prominent clubs may need to navigate a play-off to reach the knockout stage. With six matchdays completed, Arsenal leads the way with a perfect record, followed closely by Bayern Munich and reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain. The predictions suggest that Manchester City will overtake PSG, with Atalanta and Liverpool finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. Last season, 16 points were required to secure a top-eight finish, and 11 points with a favorable goal difference were needed to reach the top 24. Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are currently predicted to take seventh and eighth places with projected point totals of 15.8 and 15.5. Consequently, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Newcastle are expected to finish 11th, 12th, and 14th, respectively. The top eight teams at the end of the league phase will automatically qualify for the last 16, while the next 16 teams will participate in a two-legged play-off to determine the remaining knockout round spots. The bottom 12 teams will be eliminated without access to the Europa League. The teams that finish between ninth and 16th will be seeded, and those that finish between 17th and 24th will be unseeded. Seeded teams will not face each other, and the same applies to unseeded teams. Currently, all three English teams occupy seeded positions and are predicted to remain there, thereby avoiding each other. The play-off draw is scheduled for January 30, 2026, with the knockout play-offs taking place on February 17-18 and 24-25, 2026. The round of 16 will follow on March 10-11 and 17-18, 2026, with the quarter-finals on April 7-8 and 14-15, 2026, and the semi-finals on April 28-29 and May 5-6, 2026. The 2025/26 Champions League final will be held at the Puskas Arena in Budapest on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
