Leeds Rhinos' McDonnell to Make NRL Switch at End of 2026

James McDonnell, a key forward for the Leeds Rhinos, is set to leave the club at the end of the 2026 Super League season to pursue a career in the NRL, following in the footsteps of teammate Harry Newman. The specifics of McDonnell's new team have not been disclosed by Leeds. Newman has secured a two-year deal with the Perth Bears, effective after his current contract with the Rhinos expires in the autumn. McDonnell had a standout performance last year, playing in every game for Leeds and earning a spot in the Super League Dream Team. He was also part of England's training squad ahead of the Ashes. Originally from Wigan Warriors, McDonnell joined Leeds before the 2023 season and has had loan spells with York Knights and Leigh Leopards. Following the announcement of McDonnell's departure, the Rhinos revealed that forward Keenan Palasia has signed a three-year contract extension until 2029. Palasia joined Leeds from the Gold Coast Titans in 2025. Ian Blease, Leeds' sporting director, commented on McDonnell's impending exit, "When we extended James' contract last April, we were aware of his ambitions. He possesses a tremendous amount of self-belief and drive, which has greatly benefited the club. I expect him to give his all this season before his move." Blease also appreciated McDonnell's early announcement, allowing the club to plan for 2027. Brad Arthur, the Rhinos' head coach, expressed that while losing McDonnell is disappointing, it presents an opportunity for younger players to step up, driven by the knowledge that there will be a spot available next year.
