Manchester City's Spending Surpasses £425m in 12 Months with Semenyo Signing

Manchester City has finalized the signing of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth in a deal worth £64m. The forward has joined Pep Guardiola's team on a five-and-a-half-year contract, bringing the club's total transfer expenditure over the last 12 months to £425.9m across 14 players. Semenyo, who will wear the No 42 shirt, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I'm confident that my best football is yet to come, and I believe City is in an excellent position, still competing in four tournaments. I feel I can significantly contribute to their strong second half of the season." City outbid rival clubs Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham to secure the 26-year-old Ghana international. Manchester City's director of football, Hugo Viana, revealed that Semenyo made it clear he wanted to join City, showcasing his enthusiasm for the club throughout the process. The agreement with Bournemouth was made outside of Semenyo's £65m release clause, with City paying £62.5m plus performance-related bonuses of £1.5m and a 10% sell-on clause. The guaranteed part of the release clause was £60m, but Bournemouth will receive £62.5m over 24 months. This deal marks a significant profit for Bournemouth, which kept Semenyo for an extra six months after interest in the summer, with the sale exceeding any offers they received at that time. Before his move, Semenyo scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner in his final game for Bournemouth, securing a 3-2 victory over Tottenham. Championship club Bristol City, which sold Semenyo to Bournemouth in January 2023 for around £10m, is due to receive 20% of any profit made from his transfer. Semenyo's departure means Bournemouth has earned £266.5m from player sales in the last six months, following significant transfers such as Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid, Milos Kerkez to Liverpool, Illia Zabarnyi to Paris Saint-Germain, and Dango Ouattara to Brentford. Semenyo leaves Bournemouth having scored 10 goals and provided three assists in the Premier League this season. Upon joining Manchester City, Semenyo expressed his pride, stating, "I have watched City over the last decade under Pep Guardiola, and they have been the dominant team in the Premier League, achieving remarkable success in the Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup. They have set the highest standards, and it's a club with world-class players, facilities, and one of the greatest managers ever in Pep. I have much room for improvement, so being at this club at this stage of my career is perfect for me. It's a real privilege to be here." Viana described Semenyo as "the one we most wanted," highlighting his huge quality, including his two great feet, pace, power, and ability to influence games, as well as his room for growth and development. Manchester City has spent £1.75bn since the start of the 2016/17 season, with notable signings in January 2025 and Summer 2025.
